Wall sconce buying checklist: beyond mounting height

Mounting height is only one part of choosing a wall sconce. The fixture also needs to fit the wall, the furniture around it and the way you intend to use the light. Compare these details before selecting a design.

How far does the sconce project?

Projection is the distance a fixture extends from the wall. Check it alongside height and width, especially beside a bed, in a passage or near a door. Mark the outline and projection in the proposed location so you can judge how it relates to everyday movement.

Will the backplate fit the mounting location?

Compare the backplate dimensions with the space available. The size of a shade is not the same as the size of its backplate. Existing wall marks or an electrical box may need separate attention, so ask a qualified installer to confirm the fit and support.

Is it hardwired or plug-in?

Use the wiring information on the individual product page. A similar appearance does not mean that two sconces use the same connection. For a plug-in design, consider the outlet position and cord route; for a hardwired design, confirm the electrical work with an installer before ordering.

Are you choosing one light or a pair?

Decide whether the pair should be identical or mirrored. An asymmetric design may have a particular orientation, and photographs do not always establish whether both orientations are available. Confirm the selected option and whether the listing is for one fixture or a set.

For placement ideas, read our room-by-room sconce height guide, then check the final position against your furniture and sightlines.

What else should you compare?

  • Light-source type and the bulb details shown for that product.
  • Any stated dimming compatibility.
  • The location rating for the room where the fixture will be installed.
  • The dimensions and finish of the exact option selected.

For a bathroom or exposed location, confirm the required rating with your installer. Do not infer suitability from the shape of the shade or its placement in a collection.

Make your shortlist easy to review

Save two or three wall sconces with their selected options. Add your room measurements and a photograph of the proposed location. If a specification is unclear, contact Nowmic with those details before ordering.
